Roadway watercourse crossings have become a point source of environmental concern throughout the Province of Alberta because of poor fish passage, loss of habitat connectivity, and degradation of usable habitat.  As industrial activities expand in the province’s green zone the network of roadways will increase as will the number of watercourse crossings.  While current crossing installation practices are improving there remains a large historical network of poorly installed and managed crossings to be identified and repaired, replaced or removed. Most often, the current owners did not install the crossings that are creating this situation but they remain responsible to fix or improve any of the identified high-risk sites.

The SCARI Program (Stream Crossing & Aquatic Resource Inventory) has been designed to fulfill the objectives of the Provincial Government Watercourse Crossing Directive while helping the industry correct this legacy failure and meet the regulatory requirements of the Public Lands Act as well as the new Roadway Watercourse Crossing Inspection Protocol.  SCARI is a complete Roadway Watercourse Crossing Management System that is scalable and highly adaptive to fit any roadway tenure owner’s needs, from the largest corporate owner to the smallest private company, the SCARI system can be implemented to fit your program and needs.
